Pentagon Investigation Concludes Hegseth Put Military Personnel in Danger with Messaging App Conversation.

A long-awaited Department of Defense review has determined that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth violated official protocols by sharing classified information in a Signal messaging chat, as stated by a source familiar with the report.

Particulars of the Incident

The online conversation in question contained details about a scheduled airstrike in Yemen against Houthi fighters. This discussion was revealed after a journalist for the Atlantic was added as a member.

Other officials in the group reportedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The investigation focused solely on the actions of Hegseth, as the other participants are not employed at the Pentagon.

Signal is a commercially offered messaging app that was not authorized for transmitting classified information.

Serious Threat to Forces

The inspector general's report determined that the information shared by Hegseth was classified and posed a risk to the lives of US service members if it had been obtained by a foreign enemy force.

However, the report acknowledged that Hegseth had the ability to declassify the information he distributed, though it was not specified whether he actually exercised that authority.

Hegseth's Response

The informed individual indicated that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the inspector general. Instead, he provided a brief written statement.

In his response, Hegseth asserted he only disclosed details that would not have risked lives or jeopardized the mission. He added that he possessed the authority to downgrade information and viewed the investigation to be politically motivated.

Future Actions

The finalized investigation has been provided to Congress. An unclassified version is expected to be released in the coming days.
