Paris Saint-Germain Edges Olympique de Marseille on Penalties to Lift Trophee des Champions Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now claimed the season-opening trophy on fourteen separate times.

Paris Saint-Germain needed a dramatic leveler followed by a successful penalty shootout to overcome their arch-rivals in Kuwait and capture a fourth straight French Super Cup victory.

The Champions League holders seemed to be sailing towards a comfortable triumph in the showdown featuring the French league winners and the Coupe de France holders after the French winger opened the scoring in the opening stages.

However, Marseille fired twice late to seize a surprise lead. First, the English forward converted from the spot-kick, before Willian Pacho inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a remarkable turn of fortune, the Portuguese striker grabbed a crucial leveler in the dying moments to send the match into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Chevalier then emerged as the key figure, stopping crucial kicks from Matt O'Riley and Traore.

From the spot, Ramos, the midfielder, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all converted with composure for Paris Saint-Germain to complete a convincing shootout victory.

Now 14-time champions Paris Saint-Germain, who faced last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now lifted this trophy for the twelfth time in the past thirteen seasons.
